GENDA: an explanation

The Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act would protect people who do not follow the gender binary in the areas of:

-Housing - this relates to apartments, landlords, renting, buying, etc - nobody would be able to turn a person down, evict them, or take away their housing because they were transgender or gender non-conforming.

-Public Business - this relates to restaurants, resorts, hotels, and anything that is generally open to the public. They would not be able to turn someone away because of their gender expression.

-Employment - simple as that, nobody would be able to fire someone on the grounds of gender and gender expression or not hire them due to gender or gender expression.

- and of course, Bathrooms - this goes with public space, if someone were attacked in a bathroom based upon their gender expression it would become a hate crime. This also stands if someone were to attack someone else anywhere based on their gender expression. Right now it is not charged as a hate crime, but just assault.

This bill does NOT force private places like clubs and other things that you need a membership to to accept anyone. Just like the marriage equality bill, those places would have a say because they have their own criteria to follow.

This is for the unpopular opinionated people out there - do research before assuming things.

The fight is far from over in New York State.

Same sex marriage may be legal now but did you know that as a transgender person living in the state you can be denied housing, fired from your job, and not served in public places all because you are transgender?

On June 14th the New York State Assembly passed the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (also known as GENDA). The bill immediately died when it hit the senate. This is not the first or last time this has happened.

Over the summer and into the next session we need to fight to get our New York State Senators on board to PASS GENDA in the next session. We need to email, call, and lobby our little hearts out.

So will you stand with those whom don’t fit societies definition of male or female and fight for their rights the same way they fought for yours?

IT PASSED 33-29 IT PASSED GAY MARRIAGE IS LEGAL IN NEW YORK!

The senate has recessed to discuss procedural matters, the vote is almost assured to pass

The amendment to the original bill passed, we’re waiting on word about the actual bill now.

The energy here is fantastic! Traditional marriage supporters on one side praying, marriage equality supporters singing on the other. The buzz is in the air, the bill is on the floor, who’s ready?

the vote is going down now! if you’re not here and you’re not watching you’re missing out on history!

The Marriage Equality Bill will be coming to a vote tonight in the New York State Senate.

Fingers crossed!
